How to Ask ‘Where Is It?’ in Chinese

Ask where something is and understand a basic location answer with 在.

Quick answer

Use thing + 在哪儿?to ask where it is. Answer with thing + + location.

洗手间在哪儿?
xǐshǒujiān zài nǎr?
Where is the restroom?

Hear the phrase, then repeat it aloud.

When to use it

Use 在哪儿 when you need to find a place or object.

Common mistake

Do not put 哪儿 at the beginning just because English starts with ‘where’. Mandarin keeps it where the answer would go.

Practise aloud

wǒ de shū zài nǎr? 我的书在哪儿? Where is my book?
xǐshǒujiān zài nǎr? 洗手间在哪儿? Where is the restroom?
bēizi zài zhuōzi shàng. 杯子在桌子上。 The cup is on the table.

Ask about real objects in the room, then answer your own question. This turns one pattern into a useful speaking drill.
