How to Say ‘I Want’ in Chinese

Choose between 想 and 要 for useful requests about actions and things.

Quick answer

often sounds like ‘would like to’ before an action. is more direct and is useful when choosing a specific thing.

我想喝茶。
wǒ xiǎng hē chá.
I’d like to drink tea.
我要这个。
wǒ yào zhège.
I want this.

Hear the phrase, then repeat it aloud.

When to use it

Use + verb for something you would like to do. Use + thing when selecting or requesting it.

Common mistake

A very direct 我要… can sound abrupt in some situations. Tone of voice and context make a difference.

Practise aloud

wǒ xiǎng hē chá. 我想喝茶。 I’d like to drink tea.
wǒ xiǎng xué Zhōngwén. 我想学中文。 I want to learn Chinese.
wǒ yào zhège. 我要这个。 I want this one.

Practise both patterns with things you genuinely want. Personal examples are easier to remember than random vocabulary.
