Use 学生 for ‘student’ and 同学 for ‘classmate’ instead of treating them as the same word.
Quick answer
If you mean ‘I am a student’, say
. 同学
describes a classmate relationship.
I am a student.
He is my classmate.
Hear the phrase, then repeat it aloud.
When to use it
Use 学生
for someone’s role as a student. Use 同学
for someone who studies in the same class or school context.
Common mistake
sounds incomplete when you simply want to state that you are a student.
Practise aloud
I’m a student.
She is also a student.
He is my classmate.
Notice that 同学 often needs a relationship: my classmate, his classmate, or classmates speaking to one another.
