Common Mistake: Chinese Word Order Is Not English Word Order

Use complete Mandarin patterns instead of moving English words into a Chinese sentence one by one.

Quick answer

Learn short sentence frames as units. Mandarin question words often stay where the answer would appear.

这个多少钱?
zhège duōshao qián?
How much is this?

Hear the phrase, then repeat it aloud.

When to use it

Use familiar sentence patterns as a base, then replace one detail at a time.

Common mistake

Word-for-word translation can produce unnatural order even when every individual word is correct.

Practise aloud

wǒ xiǎng hē chá. 我想喝茶。 I’d like to drink tea.
nǐ jiào shénme míngzi? 你叫什么名字? What’s your name?
zhège duōshao qián? 这个多少钱? How much is this?

Practise the whole rhythm of each sentence. Fluency grows faster when you retrieve a useful pattern instead of rebuilding it from English every time.
