How to Introduce Yourself in Chinese

Build a short self-introduction with your name, identity, and Mandarin ability.

Quick answer

Start with 我叫 + your name. Then add one or two short facts instead of trying to say everything at once.

我叫 Louis。
wǒ jiào Louis.
My name is Louis.

Hear the phrase, then repeat it aloud.

When to use it

Use 我叫 when introducing your name. Add 我是… for identity and 我会说一点儿中文 for a little Mandarin ability.

Common mistake

Avoid translating ‘I am called’ word by word. Learn 我叫 as one useful introduction pattern.

Practise aloud

wǒ jiào Louis. 我叫 Louis。 My name is Louis.
wǒ shì xuésheng. 我是学生。 I’m a student.
wǒ huì shuō yìdiǎnr Zhōngwén. 我会说一点儿中文。 I can speak a little Chinese.

Replace the details with your own information. A useful introduction is short enough to remember and flexible enough to change.
