Front Nasal Finals: an, en, in, un, ün

Finals that end with a light -n, made at the front of the mouth.

Quick answer

These finals end in a soft ‘-n’, with the tongue tip touching just behind the top teeth.

an
en
in
un
ün

Hear each sound, then repeat it aloud.

When to use it

Finish each of these with the tongue tip lightly touching behind the upper teeth for the ‘-n’.

Common mistake

Do not let the ‘-n’ become ‘-ng’ (the back nasal group). Keep it forward and light.

Practise aloud

ān peace
hěn very
xīn heart
chūn spring
yún cloud

You’ve got this!

Feel your tongue tip finish each sound just behind the top teeth. Compare hěn (very, front -n) with a back-nasal word so you can hear the difference.
